Hi Dan, in addition to my Cloaking Starter Guide, some of my readers came up with a few questions. I´ve picked up the most frequent. Would you like to give some answers?
Hi Christian. Sure, go on…
Alright, first question: Dan, how can we avoid WAP Proxies and Translation Services?
Avoiding WAP proxies such as the Google WAP Proxy and translation services such as Babelfish or the Google Translator is a simple matter of banning the known IP addresses of these services, or simply excluding the IP addresses from the list of search engine spider IP addresses.
In KloakIt, the translation services’ IP addresses are hard-coded into the program. They are always shown the human version of a cloaked page. In the case of WAP proxies, known proxies are simply excluded from the IP address lists.
Okay, second question. Is there a problem in using Noarchive to avoid being cached by SearchEngines?
You never want to have your cloaked page archived in the search engines. If it were archived, all someone would have to do to have access to the page is view the archive. Use the robots noarchive meta tag.
The tag is becoming more and more common as copyright holders legitimately “opt out” of having their intellectual property archived by search engines. It is not reliably used as a flag for identifying cloaked sites.
In the past, people were afraid to use the robots noarchive tag because they thought it was a flag pointing them out as cloakers. Instead, they used JavaScript and/or CSS tricks to fool people into thinking they weren’t seeing a cloaked page. Those tricks are woefully easy to defeat (can you say “disable JavaScript”). Don’t be lulled into thinking those tricks work… use the robots noarchive meta tag.
Last question: What´s the best commercial Cloaking Software? So…to make it easier for you to give a proper answer: Why should people think about using Kloakit?
I think one of the best things about KloakIt is its flexibility. As it stands, it already has a wide array of features that let you create just about any kind of optimized text you like. And, since it is a work in progress, I’m always adding new features.
One of the nicest new things I’ve recently added, which really increases the program’s flexibility is a PHP module which strips cloaking down to its most essential level. KloakIt PHP Lite is a free add-on PHP script available to licensed KloakIt users which uses KloakIt’s top-of-the-line cloaking engine in a PHP module format… you can use it as an include() in your PHP pages so you can cloak any page just by adding like three lines of code (which I provide, of course).
Another great thing about KloakIt is that you get IP address updates automatically, for free. There is no need to pay for a subscription. I keep on top of the addresses, and your installations update themselves from my server without you having to worry about it.
But the thing that I am proudest of is the easy installation. I’ve done my share of installations of perl/PHP/python scripts of all kinds. Boy do I get tired of editing configuration files, uploading hundreds of files setting dozens of permissions settings, and on and on and on. KloakIt’s installation is quick and easy. Upload one file, set it’s permissions, and then run it in your browser. It does the rest.
I like the script, and we (my customers and I) have made a lot of money using it over the years, but what I really value most is the interactions I’ve had with people all over the world and the friends I’ve made. I’m probably one of the few programmers that actually enjoys giving technical support, answering questions, going over the finer points of my program’s features and just helping people get started.
That sounds interesting and of course brings up one more question: Is there any way for my readers to get some discount on Kloakit?
OK, I can do a 15% discount on all kinds of licenses. Just use coupon code “CloakingFreak” when purchasing Kloakit.
Thanks a lot, Dan.
No problem.
